The African American male victim, identified as Darrell McCoy, was thirty-one years old when his life was abruptly ended in St. Louis, Missouri. On the morning of May 4, 2016, authorities were summoned to the 3600 block of Hamilton Avenue in the North City area following reports of a person down. Upon arrival, first responders discovered McCoy’s body on the sidewalk outside a diner, where he had sustained fatal gunshot wounds.
He was pronounced dead at the scene, marking another violent tragedy in the neighborhood.

In the weeks following the shooting, investigators struggled to identify a shooter but eventually secured surveillance footage that shed light on the moments leading up to the crime. On June 1, 2016, police released this video to the public, hoping to identify a man they believed was responsible for the killing. The footage showed a person of interest walking in the vicinity, and authorities urged anyone who recognized the individual’s gait or clothing to come forward with information.
A point of contention emerged regarding the victim's background during the public appeal for tips. While police statements initially described the victim as a homeless man, this characterization was disputed by those claiming to be his family. In online tributes, an individual identifying herself as McCoy’s mother clarified that her son was not homeless, expressing the deep personal loss of her only son. Despite the release of the surveillance images and the offer of a reward for tips leading to an arrest, no immediate suspects were taken into custody, and the case relied heavily on community assistance to find the person seen in the video.
