In the early hours of October 12, 2016, a tragedy unfolded in a Blue Springs, Missouri, home that would end the life of 46-year-old Luis Cedres. Intruders broke into his residence around 12:30 a.m., leading to a fatal confrontation. Mr. Cedres was discovered in a pool of his own blood, having been shot multiple times. It was later revealed by friends and neighbors that he died a hero, protecting two teenagers who were in the house at the time of the home invasion.
The teenagers were able to hide by locking themselves in a closet while Mr. Cedres confronted the intruders, ultimately sacrificing his own life to ensure their safety.
The investigation into the deadly shooting led authorities to three individuals. Two of the suspects were identified as 17-year-old Malik S. Duren of Kansas City and 18-year-old Mahki I. Hall of Grain Valley. According to court records, three men with their faces covered and armed with handguns entered the residence. Despite the coverings, one of the victims present was able to recognize one of the intruders. A witness reported seeing a struggle outside the home, where one man held Mr. Cedres in a headlock while another pointed a gun at him as he tried to escape, firing multiple shots.
Both Duren and Hall faced a slew of charges for their alleged involvement in the incident. The charges brought against them included Robbery in the 1st Degree, Burglary in the 1st Degree, and three counts of Armed Criminal Action. They were also charged with Murder in the 2nd Degree, which specified that Luis Cedres was killed during the commission of a felony burglary. Following their arrests, prosecutors requested substantial bonds of $250,000 and $150,000 for the two defendants as the investigation continued. The community mourned the loss of Mr. Cedres, holding a vigil that was attended by his family who traveled from Puerto Rico to honor his bravery and sacrifice.
