The evening of April 13, 2024, turned into a scene of chaos and tragedy at Wilbur Young Park in Blue Springs, Missouri, when a verbal altercation escalated into deadly violence. Law enforcement officers were dispatched to the area near 1100 Southeast Adams Dairy Parkway shortly after 10:30 p.m., responding to reports of gunfire amidst a gathering of young adults.
Upon arrival, police discovered a sprawling crime scene with victims located in different areas of the park; one individual was found in the parking lot near the volleyball courts, while another was discovered near a basketball court. The victims were identified as 19-year-old LaDronal Hamilton Jr. of Kansas City and 20-year-old Karmello Matlock of Blue Springs. Emergency medical services transported both young men to local hospitals, but they were subsequently declared deceased. A third victim, a 17-year-old male, also sustained gunshot wounds but survived with non-life-threatening injuries.
Detectives launched a homicide investigation, piecing together the events that led to the double fatal shooting. Witness statements and surveillance footage revealed that a physical fight had broken out among a group at the park before weapons were drawn. The investigation indicated that 19-year-old Marquis Earl Savannah charged at one of the victims, initiating a physical struggle. During the confrontation, an AR-style rifle was dropped near the victim. Authorities stated that Savannah retrieved the rifle, ran a short distance, and then turned to fire multiple rounds. Court documents specified that Hamilton was the victim Savannah was accused of shooting. Simultaneously, a second suspect, identified as a juvenile, drew a handgun and fired shots at Matlock. The footage captured at least eight muzzle flashes from the rifle Savannah wielded, marking the swift and lethal escalation of the dispute.
In the aftermath of the violence, authorities apprehended two suspects. Marquis Savannah faced serious charges, including first-degree murder and armed criminal action. As the legal process unfolded, Savannah entered a guilty plea in Jackson County Circuit Court to reduced charges of voluntary manslaughter and armed criminal action. In March 2025, a judge sentenced him to 25 years in prison for his role in the killing of LaDronal Hamilton Jr. The second suspect, a 17-year-old whose identity was withheld due to his age, was also taken into custody and accused of firing the shots that killed Matlock. The community and families of the victims were left to mourn the loss of two young lives cut short by a sudden eruption of gun violence in a public park.
