On November 10, 2018, police officers in Blue Springs, Missouri, responded to a report of gunfire at a residence located in the 1200 block of Southwest Sunset Street. Upon their arrival at the scene, law enforcement discovered the lifeless body of 17-year-old male Jayden Lockett in the basement of the home. He had sustained a fatal gunshot wound during the incident, which authorities described as a chaotic exchange of gunfire.
Two other individuals were also found injured at the scene; a 15-year-old was transported to a hospital in critical condition, while a 19-year-old suffered minor injuries.
Investigators quickly began piecing together the events that led to the violence, interviewing witnesses who provided insight into the motive behind the gathering. According to court records, witnesses stated that Lockett had arrived at the residence with another individual with the intention of robbing the occupants of money and drugs. One witness, who admitted to driving the pair to the house, told detectives that he waited in the vehicle until his passenger returned, instructing him to flee because shots had been fired inside. The driver and the passenger subsequently abandoned the vehicle at a nearby elementary school.
Following an investigation that spanned several months, authorities identified a suspect in connection with Lockett’s death. In January 2019, police arrested Aden J. Kaler, who was also a teenager at the time of the incident. Prosecutors charged Kaler with second-degree murder, attempted robbery, and armed criminal action. The charges stemmed from the allegation that Kaler had accompanied Lockett to the home to commit the robbery that resulted in the deadly shootout. Kaler was held on a $300,000 bond as legal proceedings commenced against him for his role in the fatal encounter.
