In the late afternoon of February 26, 2021, a burst of violence shattered the calm in a business area in Blue Springs, Missouri, leaving 46-year-old Gregory B. Marchand with a fatal gunshot wound. The incident unfolded around 2:50 p.m. in the 700 block of NW Missouri 7, a strip of fast-food restaurants and other businesses. When police arrived, they discovered Marchand, a resident of Blue Springs, suffering from his injury.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital but ultimately succumbed to the gunshot wound.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led to two young men from Kansas City. Zaylen Z. Smith and Donavan M. Jordan, both 21 years old at the time, were identified as suspects and subsequently arrested. The Jackson County Prosecutor's Office filed charges against both men. Smith faced the more severe charges of second-degree murder and armed criminal action. Jordan was charged with unlawful use of a weapon and fleeing from law enforcement. Authorities also indicated that they were investigating a third person of interest in connection with the homicide.
Court documents revealed the tragic circumstances that allegedly led to Marchand's death, indicating the shooting occurred during a planned marijuana transaction. According to the co-defendant's statement, Smith shot Marchand after opening the passenger side door of his vehicle and then stole the money that had been exchanged for the drugs. Surveillance footage from a nearby store captured a figure, believed to be Smith, approaching the scene with a firearm. Following the shooting, the suspects were located in Kansas City, leading to a police pursuit that ended in a crash, after which a firearm was recovered from their vehicle. Prosecutors requested a bond of $250,000 for Smith and $50,000 for Jordan.
