In the winter of 2017, a tragedy unfolded in Kansas City, Missouri, claiming the life of 24-year-old Brenda Vera. On the evening of January 17th, police responded to a call about a shooting and discovered Vera fatally shot inside a truck parked in a driveway on the 2500 block of Lister Avenue. The initial investigation pointed to a grim sequence of events that began with a road-rage incident.
Witnesses at the scene informed officers that Vera's boyfriend, Eric B.
Marquez, had been with her and had run into the nearby residence after the shooting. This led to a six-hour standoff with police, as negotiators attempted to make contact with Marquez. However, when officers eventually entered the home, they found it empty; Marquez had managed to evade capture. He remained at large following the incident.
According to court records, Marquez, a convicted felon, allegedly told his brother that the shooting was an accident. He claimed that during a confrontation with another driver following a collision, the other driver brandished a weapon. In response, Marquez allegedly drew his own handgun and fired at the other driver, but tragically struck Vera instead. Following the shooting, Marquez drove the truck with Vera inside to the Lister Avenue residence.
In the wake of the incident, the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office filed multiple felony charges against Marquez, including abandonment of a corpse and unlawful possession of a firearm. Prosecutors requested a bond of $100,000. The case highlighted the devastating consequences of road rage and left a community in mourning. A GoFundMe campaign was established to assist with her funeral expenses. Brenda Vera was remembered as a loving mother to her young son, a cherished daughter, sister, and friend.
