On the night of July 8, 2017, the atmosphere in the parking lot of the Soul Lounge nightclub in Kansas City, Missouri, turned from celebration to tragedy. Dasean J. Davis, a 24-year-old male, had gone out that evening to celebrate his uncle's birthday. Described by his family as a dedicated father to a four-year-old son and a man with a clean record who typically spent his time working or with his family, Davis was reportedly in the wrong place at the wrong time.
He had recently been laid off from his job and had taken the rare opportunity to go out and socialize with his uncle, Phillip Adams, and friends.
Around 1:30 a.m., as patrons were in the parking lot of the club located in the 9900 block of Holmes Road, an argument broke out between two women. Witnesses and family members emphasized that Davis was not involved in the dispute but was merely a bystander caught in the sudden escalation of violence. Gunfire erupted during the altercation, striking Davis and another individual. despite his critical injuries, Davis managed to drive himself to a nearby hospital in a desperate bid for survival. Tragically, he succumbed to his wounds shortly after arriving. The second victim, whose identity was not released, survived the shooting with non-life-threatening injuries.
