On the early morning of December 10, 2022, in Kansas City, Missouri, 27-year-old male Tyler Lowell Wallace was winding down after a late shift at work. He had returned to his home in the 10700 block of Newton Avenue around 12:30 a.m. and, hours later, stepped out onto his front porch. It was approximately 4:00 a.m., and he was reportedly sitting on his stoop, wearing earbuds and looking up a recipe for potato soup on his phone.
Moments later, the quiet of the neighborhood was shattered by the sound of gunfire.
Police officers rushed to the scene just after 4:00 a.m. following reports of a shooting in the Ruskin area. Upon arrival, they were directed to the residence where they discovered Wallace unresponsive and suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency medical services attended to him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Witnesses and neighbors later reported hearing a barrage of shots, with some accounts suggesting as many as 15 rounds were fired, striking him in the head and face.
At the time of his death, Wallace had recently purchased the home and had been living there for only about three months, proud to be starting a new chapter as a homeowner. Friends and family described him as an intelligent individual with a deep passion for science, history, and video games like Minecraft and Elder Scrolls. He was also known for his admiration of Mahatma Gandhi and his peaceful nature, making the violent manner of his death particularly shocking to those who knew him.
As of the last available reports, the investigation into his murder has not yielded any arrests. Detectives have not released a description of a suspect or a motive for the killing, which appeared to catch the victim completely off guard.
