On November 21, 2017, the quiet community of Marshfield, Missouri, was shattered by a violent sequence of events that claimed the life of 47-year-old Danny Lee Marler Jr. The incident unfolded in the early morning hours at a residence on North Mill Street, stemming from a volatile domestic situation involving a third party. A woman, who had reportedly been assaulted earlier by her boyfriend, 37-year-old Daniel James Hand of Springfield, had reached out to Marler for assistance in ending the
relationship.
When Hand arrived at the residence around 2:30 a.m., the confrontation quickly escalated into deadly violence. According to investigators, Hand, in a fit of rage, opened fire, striking and killing Marler. He also turned the weapon on his girlfriend, shooting her in the leg. Despite her injury, the woman managed to escape the immediate vicinity and hide outside the home until law enforcement arrived, a move authorities later suggested likely saved her life.
The violence did not end with the initial shooting. When officers from the Marshfield Police Department and the Webster County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene, they were met with gunfire from the suspect. A brief shootout ensued in the darkness, during which Hand fired upon the officers. Law enforcement returned fire, striking Hand in the leg and neutralizing the threat. No officers were injured during the exchange.
Following the altercation, Daniel James Hand was taken into custody and treated for his injuries. Prosecutors subsequently charged him with a litany of serious felonies, including first-degree murder for the death of Danny Lee Marler, domestic assault in the first degree, and armed criminal action. He was held on a $1 million bond as the community grappled with the shock of the fatal domestic dispute.
