In the late hours of a Tuesday night in Clinton, Missouri, a tragic series of events began to unfold, culminating in the death of 30-year-old Clinton Police Officer Christopher Ryan Morton. On March 6, 2018, Officer Morton, along with two other officers, responded to a 911 call that erroneously sent them to a residence on West Grandriver Street. The emergency call, it would later be discovered, originated from a location 20 miles away, a fatal mistake that set the stage for a violent confrontation.
Upon their arrival at the Clinton address, the officers were met by a woman, Tammy D. Widger, who assured them that there was no problem. However, moments after the officers entered the home, a man inside, James E. Waters, opened fire on them with a rifle. The sudden eruption of gunfire resulted in all three officers being struck. While two of the officers were able to retreat, Officer Morton was critically wounded and went down inside the residence. Scanner audio from that night captured the desperate moments as his fellow officers pleaded with him to 'Stay with us Morton.'
A standoff ensued, and after several hours, a SWAT team made entry into the home. They found both Officer Christopher Ryan Morton and the suspect, 37-year-old James Waters, deceased from gunshot wounds. The two other wounded officers were transported to a hospital for treatment of their injuries. Investigators later found methamphetamine and other drugs inside the house, alleging that Widger and Waters were involved in drug-related activities.
In the aftermath of the deadly shooting, Tammy D. Widger was taken into custody. She was subsequently charged in connection with the incident and ultimately pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and possession of a controlled substance. For her role in the events that led to Officer Morton's death, Widger was sentenced to 20 years in prison. The tragic death of Officer Morton was the second line-of-duty death for the Clinton Police Department in just seven months, deeply affecting the small community. His family later filed a wrongful death lawsuit, which was settled, alleging that a faulty 911 system and negligence led to the fatal encounter.
