On June 5, 2015, 18-year-old Ruben Martinez Jr. Barrera was shot and killed in Long Beach, California. The incident occurred at around 11:55 p.m. on the 5400 block of Elm Avenue. When officers arrived at the scene, they found Ruben with gunshot wounds to the upper body, and he was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. The motive for the shooting was initially unknown, but it was suspected to be gang-related. The case remained unsolved for several years as authorities sought any information from the public that might lead to the identification of the shooter.
In November 2015, the Long Beach Police Department identified Albert Jesse Rodriguez as a suspect in the murder. Authorities issued a $2 million warrant for his arrest and warned that Rodriguez should be considered armed and dangerous. However, he evaded capture and remained at large for over five years. In early 2021, authorities received information that Rodriguez was hiding near the U.S.-Mexico border, and a coordinated effort involving Mexican authorities, the U.S. Marshals, and Long Beach Police Department led to his arrest in Baja California on March 10, 2021. Rodriguez was subsequently extradited and booked into the Long Beach City Jail, where he was charged with one count of murder and held on $2 million bail.
The case highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement in solving violent crimes, particularly those with potential gang connections. The cooperation between international and local law enforcement was instrumental in Rodriguez's capture, finally allowing for some progress in seeking justice for Ruben Martinez Jr. Barrera's family and community.
