In the late hours of a Sunday evening in August 2017, a routine traffic stop in Clinton, Missouri, turned into a fatal encounter for a dedicated police officer. Gary Michael, a 37-year-old male officer with the Clinton Police Department, initiated a stop on a 2008 Dodge Nitro for a registration violation. As Officer Michael exited his patrol car, the driver of the SUV also got out and opened fire with a rifle, striking the officer.
Despite being mortally wounded, Michael was able to return fire before the suspect fled the scene.
The suspect, identified as 39-year-old Ian McCarthy, sped away from the scene but crashed his vehicle just a few blocks away and then fled on foot, sparking a massive manhunt. For two days, law enforcement agencies searched for McCarthy. He was eventually apprehended without incident while walking along a state highway in a rural area near Clinton. His arrest brought a sense of relief to the community that had been on edge since the shooting of the officer, a man remembered by his brother as having 'a heart to serve.'
Following his capture, Ian McCarthy was charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. In July 2023, after a trial that had been moved to another county to ensure impartiality, a jury found McCarthy guilty of the first-degree murder of Officer Gary Michael. The jury considered the death penalty, but ultimately, in September 2023, McCarthy was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The death of Officer Michael, the first in the line of duty for the Clinton Police Department, left a lasting impact on the community, with over a thousand people attending his funeral to pay their respects.
