On the evening of May 4, 2019, tragedy struck in the 500 block of South Carter Street in Clinton, Missouri. Officers from the Clinton Police Department were dispatched to the scene around 8:40 p.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered 24-year-old Jonathan Joseph Nahrstedt suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The young man, a resident of Warsaw, Missouri, received immediate life-saving measures from the responding officers before being transported by
ambulance to the Golden Valley Memorial Hospital Emergency Room. Despite the efforts of emergency personnel, Nahrstedt succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
At the scene of the shooting, police located and arrested a suspect, 21-year-old Jeremy Dalton Schley of Clinton. Schley was taken into custody and initially placed on a 24-hour investigative hold in the Henry County Jail while detectives from the Clinton Police Department and deputies from the Henry County Sheriff's Office conducted interviews with witnesses and examined evidence. The investigation into the homicide commenced immediately, though authorities did not initially release specific details regarding the motive or the events leading up to the fatal encounter.
While the legal proceedings against Schley were set in motion following his arrest, the case seemingly came to an unexpected conclusion two years later. Jeremy Dalton Schley passed away at the age of 24 on August 8, 2021, at his home in Windsor, Missouri. No further information regarding a trial or conviction for the death of Jonathan Nahrstedt was widely publicized prior to Schley's death, leaving the 2019 shooting as the primary public record connecting the two men.
