On the evening of June 8, 2018, a violent incident claimed the life of Sammy Holmes, a 30-year-old Black male and aspiring musician from the Kansas City area. Holmes had been at an Applebee’s restaurant located on Missouri 350 Highway in Raytown, a suburb within the metropolitan area. According to reports, he was inside his vehicle in the parking lot around 6:00 p.m. when gunfire erupted.
Witnesses in the vicinity reported hearing shots fired, prompting immediate calls to law enforcement.
After sustaining gunshot wounds, Holmes attempted to flee the scene in his black Hyundai. He managed to drive approximately half a mile away from the restaurant before losing control of the vehicle and crashing near a Sonic Drive-In. Bystanders who witnessed the aftermath rushed to his aid, finding him lying in the street. Emergency responders arrived shortly thereafter and transported him to a local hospital where he underwent surgery. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and died overnight.
Holmes, known locally by his stage name 'Klark Kent Da Gent,' was a devoted husband and father who had been actively pursuing a career in the music industry. In the months leading up to his death, he had traveled to Los Angeles to meet with producers and had made plans to relocate his family to the West Coast to further his artistic ambitions. His death left his wife and children grieving the loss of a man described by loved ones as a dedicated family figure and a positive spirit.
In the wake of the homicide, investigators from the Raytown Police Department and the Kansas City Metro Squad launched a probe into the shooting. Detectives released surveillance footage from inside the Applebee’s showing a woman they described as a person of interest. The individual, seen wearing a dark sleeveless shirt and patterned bottoms, was subsequently identified and contacted by authorities. However, no arrests were made following that interaction. Years after the event, the case has remained open with no suspects publicly charged or convicted in connection with the murder.
