In the late hours of a September evening in Kansas City, Missouri, a sequence of events unfolded that tragically cut short the life of 29-year-old Sheybeon Wyatt-Thompson. On September 11, 2021, Wyatt-Thompson, a Black male, was a passenger in a vehicle that became the center of a violent altercation in the vicinity of 67th Street and Manchester Avenue.
The car, moving at a high rate of speed, struck a parked vehicle before coming to a stop.
Following the collision, the driver of the car, later identified as Roy L. Broadus, also 29, exited the vehicle and began firing at a group of individuals nearby. The situation escalated as some of the individuals in the group returned fire. In the exchange of gunfire, Wyatt-Thompson sustained a fatal gunshot wound. The vehicle he was in was later located near Gregory Boulevard and Elmwood Avenue before ultimately arriving at Research Medical Center. Despite medical efforts, Sheybeon Wyatt-Thompson was pronounced dead the following day, on September 12, 2021.
The investigation into the shooting led authorities to identify Roy L. Broadus as the primary suspect. A significant piece of evidence, Broadus's driver's license, was discovered inside the vehicle. He was taken into custody on October 8, 2021. The Jackson County Prosecutor's Office subsequently charged Broadus with a total of nine felony counts. These charges include second-degree murder for the death of Sheybeon Wyatt-Thompson, three counts of first-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon, and four counts of armed criminal action. Prosecutors requested a cash bond of $250,000 for Broadus. Reports indicate that Broadus claimed he acted in self-defense.
