On January 16, 2015, in the Northland area of Kansas City, Missouri, 69-year-old Dennis Gene Honey was killed in a violent domestic incident. A long-time resident of the area and a dedicated serviceman for Southwestern Bell Co. for nearly three decades, Dennis had formerly lived in Lebanon, Missouri, before settling in Kansas City. He was known for his involvement in the community as a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Park Hill Baptist Church.
The tragedy unfolded on a Friday
afternoon in the 5100 block of Northwest Linden Road. Dennis was sitting in a pickup truck outside a residence alongside his sister when they were approached by her son, 30-year-old James Jolly. According to police reports, Jolly opened fire on both his mother and his uncle while they remained inside the vehicle. Dennis sustained fatal gunshot wounds and died at the scene. His sister was also struck by the gunfire and was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, though she later recovered from her injuries.
Immediately following the shooting, witnesses observed James Jolly retreating into the nearby home where he lived with both his mother and Dennis. As law enforcement officers arrived at the scene, they observed the suspect entering the residence, followed shortly by the sound of a single gunshot. Upon entering the home around 5:00 p.m., police discovered Jolly deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities classified the case as a murder-suicide, noting that because the perpetrator died by his own hand, no arrests were made, and no criminal trial ensued.
