On July 4, 2018, a 31-year-old White male named Dave Matthews was working his shift as a delivery driver for Imo's Pizza in St. Louis, Missouri. Around midnight, while fulfilling an order in the Tower Grove South neighborhood, he was ambushed near the intersection of Potomac Street and Gustine Avenue. Unknown assailants opened fire on him as he sat in his vehicle, striking him multiple times, including two critical wounds to the neck.
Despite the severity of the attack, he was discovered alive and rushed to a local hospital, where medical staff worked to stabilize him.
For several days, family and friends held onto hope as Matthews remained hospitalized. He was initially responsive to simple questions and able to move his limbs, leading loved ones to believe he might pull through. However, his condition deteriorated rapidly due to complications from his injuries, which caused a massive stroke. On July 8, 2018, four days after the shooting, he succumbed to his wounds and passed away surrounded by his family. He was remembered by his community as a kind, music-loving individual who also worked at a local CD Warehouse store and was his mother’s only son.
The investigation into the homicide has been ongoing, but law enforcement has struggled to identify the individuals responsible. Despite extensive canvassing of the neighborhood by friends and family, as well as a significant reward offered by CrimeStoppers and his employer, no suspects have been publicly named or taken into custody. Police have not released a description of the shooter, and the motive for the attack remains unclear. The case remains open with authorities continuing to urge anyone with information to come forward.
