In August 2023, authorities in the St. Louis metropolitan area launched a homicide investigation following the discovery of a deceased male in East St. Louis. The victim, identified as 64-year-old Anthony Jackson, was found on August 12 in a vacant lot located in the 1700 block of Ridge Avenue. He had suffered multiple gunshot wounds. Jackson was a resident of O’Fallon, Illinois, a suburb within the Metro East region.
The discovery of his body was soon linked to another violent crime discovered nearby; while Illinois State Police agents were processing the scene of Jackson's death, they were notified of a second victim, 74-year-old Willie Wallace of Swansea, found shot to death approximately three miles away in the 700 block of North 55th Street.
Investigators from the Illinois State Police and the East St. Louis Police Department determined that the two homicides were connected, leading to a months-long probe into the circumstances surrounding the double murder. The investigation eventually identified two primary suspects: 35-year-old Cierra Whitley and a 15-year-old male juvenile. Authorities alleged that both suspects were involved in the fatal shootings of Jackson and Wallace.
Legal proceedings against the suspects began the following year. In March 2024, the St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s Office charged Cierra Whitley with two counts of first-degree murder while she was already in custody on unrelated charges. A juvenile petition was also filed against the 15-year-old accomplice. The teenager was subsequently taken into custody in June 2024 and detained at the St. Clair County Juvenile Detention Center. Both suspects face serious charges for their alleged roles in the violent deaths of Anthony Jackson and Willie Wallace, with the case highlighting a cross-jurisdictional effort to address violent crime in the area.
