On the night of April 3, 2016, violence erupted in the heart of downtown St. Louis, Missouri, claiming the life of a young man just steps away from the city’s most iconic landmark. Around midnight, police officers responded to a shooting in the 20 block of South 4th Street, near the intersection with Chestnut Street. The location was situated in the shadow of the Gateway Arch, an area typically associated with tourism rather than violent crime.
Upon arrival, authorities discovered 19-year-old Isaiah Harris unresponsive inside his vehicle.
Investigators determined that Harris had sustained fatal gunshot wounds while sitting in his car. The 19-year-old, known to friends and family by nicknames such as 'Zeek' and 'Zay,' was a resident of St. Louis who worked in maintenance and janitorial services for the Normandy School District. The shooting was part of a particularly violent night in the city, which saw multiple deadly incidents occur within a span of several hours. Homicide detectives immediately began processing the scene, searching for evidence that would explain the sudden attack on the young man in the downtown corridor.
Approximately a week after the homicide, St. Louis Metropolitan Police announced a breakthrough in the case. On April 12, 2016, prosecutors charged 23-year-old Darrion Dardon in connection with Harris's death. Dardon faced serious allegations, including first-degree murder and armed criminal action. Authorities stated that Dardon played a role in the shooting that left Harris dead inside his vehicle. Following the charges, Dardon was ordered held on a $1 million cash-only bond as the case moved through the justice system.
