On the afternoon of November 24, 2018, a tragic sequence of events unfolded in the 5800 block of Bermuda Drive in Normandy, Missouri, claiming the life of Gerrian Jerrod Green Jr. The 16-year-old male, who was known to friends and family as a kind-hearted individual, was at a residence with his best friend, 18-year-old Korrie Black. The two young men, whose relationship was described by family members as being like brothers, became embroiled in a heated dispute involving a firearm that Black
had reportedly borrowed from Green. As the argument escalated, it spilled outside the home, where the situation turned deadly.
In the midst of the confrontation, Black fired multiple shots at Green. The gunfire erupted near an elementary school, and police arriving at the scene found the teenager suffering from several gunshot wounds. Despite the emergency response, Green succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The shooting was witnessed by the victim’s young sister, who was present during the altercation. Following the incident, authorities identified Black as the primary suspect. He initially fled the scene in a white Pontiac Grand Prix but was later apprehended and taken into custody.
Legal proceedings against Korrie Black extended over several years. He was charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with the death of his friend. During the trial in St. Louis County, Black took the stand in his own defense, claiming that he had shot Green in self-defense. He attempted to argue that Green was close enough to grab the weapon, posing an immediate threat. However, this account was directly contradicted by the testimony of Green’s sister. In a dramatic moment in the courtroom, she reenacted the scene, demonstrating the significant distance between her brother and the shooter, thereby refuting the claim that Green could have reached the gun.
In September 2023, a jury rejected the self-defense argument and convicted Black of the lesser charge of second-degree murder, alongside the armed criminal action charge. The testimony provided by Green's sister was cited by prosecutors as a pivotal factor in the verdict, with the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney noting her composure and credibility. In November 2023, nearly five years after the fatal shooting, Korrie Black was sentenced to 24 years in prison for the killing of his best friend.
