In December of 2018, the life of 29-year-old Mark Burnett Jr., a Black male from Saint Louis, Missouri, was tragically cut short. His death stemmed from a dispute with Matthew Mancini, then 27, who suspected Burnett of stealing from him. This suspicion led to a fatal confrontation that would ultimately be detailed in court proceedings.
The incident occurred on December 11, 2018, when Mancini confronted Burnett.
During the altercation, Mancini forced Burnett to kneel and then struck him in the head with a firearm. The gun discharged during this assault, inflicting a fatal wound. In an attempt to hide his actions, Mancini wrapped Burnett's body in plastic and concealed it in the trunk of his vehicle.
The discovery of Burnett's body came about when police were executing a search warrant at Mancini's residence on Louisiana Avenue. Upon searching the property, officers found Burnett's remains in the trunk of Mancini's car. Mancini was subsequently arrested and faced serious charges for his role in Burnett's death.
Initially, Mancini was charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. However, the legal process saw these charges amended. Mancini ultimately pleaded guilty to the lesser charges of second-degree murder and tampering with physical evidence. In court, he expressed remorse, stating that he never intended to cause Burnett's death. As a result of a plea agreement, Mancini was sentenced to 16 years in prison for the murder and received a concurrent four-year sentence for tampering with evidence. The armed criminal action charge was dismissed as part of this agreement. During the sentencing, Burnett's parents were present and provided victim impact statements, sharing the profound and lasting grief caused by the loss of their son.
