On the evening of March 8, 2019, a thirty-year-old African American man named Allen Davis was critically injured in a shooting incident in Kansas City, Missouri. Davis had traveled to an auto body shop located near the intersection of 46th Street and Prospect Avenue to check on a friend’s vehicle. Upon arriving, he discovered the business was already closed for the day.
Lacking his own transportation, he walked to a nearby bus stop to wait for a ride home.
While Davis was standing at the bus stop around 7:30 p.m., a dark-colored vehicle, possibly black, approached the area. According to witness accounts and surveillance footage reviewed by investigators, a passenger exited the car and opened fire without any apparent provocation or interaction. Davis was struck multiple times by the gunfire before the assailant returned to the vehicle, which then fled the scene. Despite sustaining six gunshot wounds, Davis managed to drag himself a half-block to a nearby gas station to seek help.
Emergency responders transported Davis to a local hospital where he remained in critical condition for several days. He was able to speak with family members during his hospitalization, but his condition eventually deteriorated. He succumbed to his injuries one week later, passing away on March 15, 2019. The homicide left his family, including a young daughter, searching for answers regarding the motive behind the ambush.
Detectives with the Kansas City Police Department gathered surveillance video from the area, which captured the shooting but did not provide a clear enough view to immediately identify the shooter or the driver. Police appealed to the public for tips, noting the busy nature of the intersection and the likelihood that witnesses might have seen the vehicle involved.
