On the weekend of July 20, 2019, a tragic incident unfolded in North St. Louis County involving the death of 14-year-old Ien Coleman. The young male, who resided in the 2100 block of Chippewa in South St. Louis, was visiting the Riverview Park Place apartments located in the 10000 block of Toelle Lane. Authorities were alerted to the situation when officers received a call for a welfare check at the apartment complex just before 11:00 a.m.
that Saturday morning.
Upon arrival, first responders discovered the teenager inside a first-floor unit, which neighbors believed to be vacant at the time. He had sustained a single gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigation details revealed that Coleman had been in the apartment with a group of other teenagers when the shooting occurred. Residents of the complex expressed concern over safety in the area, noting that gunfire was not an uncommon occurrence in the neighborhood.
