On July 29, 2024, the community of Olivette in St. Louis County, Missouri, was shaken by a violent sequence of events that claimed the life of 18-year-old Teriq Receon Lewis-Rushing. The incident unfolded in the early morning hours within the 9400 block of Olive Boulevard. Local law enforcement officers from the Olivette Police Department were initially dispatched to the scene following reports of a shooting at approximately 12:50 a.m.
Upon their arrival, the situation remained active and tense, with officers hearing a gunshot nearby as they began to canvas the area. Fearing they were under fire, the responding officers issued a call for aid, drawing support from neighboring agencies to secure the scene.
Subsequent searches of the area revealed a tragic discovery. Teriq Lewis-Rushing was found deceased inside an apartment complex, having suffered a fatal gunshot wound. A short distance away, in a field across Olive Boulevard, police located the body of another teenager. The St. Louis County Police Department’s Bureau of Crimes Against Persons was requested to lead the investigation, tasked with piecing together the timeline that led to the death of the St. Louis male.
Investigators determined that the violence stemmed from an altercation between Lewis-Rushing and a suspect identified as 16-year-old Mason McMahan of High Ridge, Missouri. According to the police inquiry, the two teenagers had been involved in an argument inside the apartment building. The dispute escalated when McMahan shot Lewis-Rushing. Following the shooting, McMahan fled the building and proceeded north into the nearby field. Authorities concluded that the gunshot heard by arriving officers was a self-inflicted wound fired by McMahan, who was found with a handgun recovered next to his body. The case was classified as a murder-suicide, and due to the death of the sole suspect, no arrests were made or charges filed in connection with the homicide.
