In the late summer evening of August 23, 2019, in Saint-Louis, Missouri, the life of 8-year-old Jurnee Thompson was tragically cut short by gunfire. Jurnee, an African American female, had been enjoying a high school football jamboree at Soldan High School. After the event, as people were leaving, a series of fights broke out, and shots were fired into the crowd.
Jurnee was struck and fatally wounded.
The chaotic scene also left three other individuals wounded: two 16-year-old boys and a 64-year-old woman. They were transported to the hospital and were listed in stable condition. Jurnee, however, succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Her father described her as a 'young woman with an old soul,' now left to mourn the sudden and senseless loss of his daughter.
In the wake of the shooting, the community grieved and called for an end to the gun violence that had been plaguing the city. A vigil was held in Jurnee's memory at Herzog Elementary School, where she was a student. City officials, including the mayor, announced a significant reward for any information that would lead to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for Jurnee's death.
Despite the reward and public pleas for information, the investigation into Jurnee Thompson's death has not led to any publicly announced arrests or the identification of any suspects. The case remains a painful and unsolved tragedy for her family and the Saint-Louis community, a stark reminder of the devastating impact of gun violence on innocent lives.
