On the afternoon of January 17, 2016, a tragedy unfolded in the North St. Louis neighborhood of Missouri involving a 14-year-old female named Jamayha Luss. She was an eighth-grade student at Gateway Middle School who was known for her dedication to her studies and her aspirations of becoming a professional dancer. That Sunday, she was visiting a friend’s home located in the 5300 block of Patton Avenue.
The gathering took a turn when two teenage boys arrived at the residence to visit the group.
Circumstances inside the home escalated quickly, leading to a weapon being discharged. Authorities reported that Jamayha was shot in the back during the incident. Emergency responders rushed her to a nearby hospital in hopes of saving her life, but she ultimately succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead. Homicide detectives were called to the scene just before 1:30 p.m. to investigate the events that led to the shooting, initially focusing their search on the two male visitors who had been present at the house.
Following the shooting, police identified a suspect, and shortly after the investigation began, a 14-year-old boy turned himself in to law enforcement. He was taken into custody by juvenile authorities. The teen was subsequently charged with second-degree murder in connection with Jamayha's death. While the specific motive and the precise details of the interaction remained part of the ongoing juvenile investigation, the community and family were left to mourn the sudden loss of a young girl who had shown great promise.
