On a summer evening in St. Louis, Missouri, the life of Amber Williams, a 32-year-old Black female from Florissant, was tragically cut short. On July 28, 2024, what should have been a regular evening turned into a scene of violence outside Sam's Southern Eatery on Gravois Avenue. Shortly before 8:40 p.m., gunfire erupted, leaving Williams fatally wounded and injuring three men.
First responders rushed to the scene and transported her to a hospital, but her injuries proved too severe, and she was pronounced dead.
The aftermath of the shooting set in motion a determined investigation by the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Division. Their efforts, with assistance from the FBI SWAT team and the St. Louis County Police Department's Tactical Unit, led to a significant breakthrough a little over two weeks later. On August 13, two suspects were taken into custody. The following day, formal charges were filed against 33-year-old Katrina Kelly and 37-year-old Kyle Penton.
Court documents began to sketch a clearer picture of the events that transpired that fatal night. It is alleged that Kelly drove Penton and another person to the restaurant. Surveillance footage reportedly showed the suspects approaching a car where three of the victims were and then opening fire. The fourth victim was nearby when the shooting began and was also hit. Kelly reportedly admitted to her role in driving the men to the location. Both Kelly and Penton are now facing charges of first-degree murder, three counts of assault, and four counts of armed criminal action. They are currently being held in custody without the possibility of bond as the investigation continues.
