Zion Israel was a two-year-old female toddler living in St. Louis County, Missouri, whose life was cut short on November 20, 2019. Residing with her family in the 200 block of Tay Road in the Glasgow Village neighborhood, Zion was the subject of a frantic emergency call that afternoon. Authorities were initially summoned to the home around 3:35 p.m.
under the report of an electrocution, a distressing scenario that prompted an immediate response from first responders and law enforcement.
Upon arriving at the residence, St. Louis County police officers discovered that the initial report of electrocution was incorrect. Instead, they found the toddler suffering from a critical gunshot wound. Emergency personnel immediately attempted life-saving measures and rushed Zion to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment. Despite their efforts, she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after her arrival.
Detectives launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting, uncovering that the fatal injury was self-inflicted but stemmed from an unsecured firearm left within the child's reach. Investigators determined that a loaded gun had been placed in the top drawer of a dresser, a location that the two-year-old was able to access. The discovery shifted the focus of the inquiry toward parental negligence regarding the storage of the weapon.
Following the investigation, police arrested the victim's father, 34-year-old Uziel Israel. On November 22, 2019, prosecutors charged him with first-degree endangering the welfare of a child, a felony offense resulting from the death of a child. Uziel Israel was taken into custody on November 25, 2019, as authorities held him accountable for leaving the firearm in a location accessible to his daughter, leading to the tragic incident.
