Ashanti Jamia Taylor, a 24-year-old African American woman, lost her life on April 6, 2024, following a violent incident in St. Louis County, Missouri. The tragedy unfolded in the municipality of Berkeley on a Saturday night, cutting short the life of the young woman who was later memorialized by friends and family in the Spanish Lake area.
According to reports from the Berkeley Police Department, Taylor was a passenger in a vehicle driven by Vaughn Spivey when the fatal altercation
occurred. Authorities indicated that the two were involved in an argument while traveling inside the car. During the dispute, Spivey allegedly produced a firearm and shot Taylor in the chest. Rather than stopping immediately for help at a nearby medical facility, investigators stated that Spivey drove past a hospital before eventually arriving at his residence, where he contacted emergency services.
Upon their arrival, first responders found Taylor critically injured in the passenger seat of the vehicle. She was transported to a hospital but succumbed to her injuries shortly thereafter. Spivey, who remained at the scene, reportedly waived his Miranda rights and admitted to discharging the weapon, though he claimed the shooting was accidental.
Prosecutors subsequently charged Vaughn Spivey with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with Taylor’s death. Following his arrest, a judge set his bond at $500,000, cash-only. The case highlighted a domestic dispute that escalated into lethal violence, leaving the community and Taylor's loved ones to mourn her untimely passing.
