In a quiet neighborhood in unincorporated north St. Louis County, a welfare check on the afternoon of May 1, 2023, led to a grim discovery. Inside a home in the 2700 block of Rottingdean Drive, police officers found the bodies of 60-year-old Cheryl Washington and a 61-year-old man. Both had sustained fatal gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene.
The preliminary investigation by St.
Louis County Police Crimes Against Persons detectives suggests that the incident was a murder-suicide. It is believed that the man, identified as Dana Haney, shot and killed Ms. Washington before turning the gun on himself. Responding officers were initially called to the residence for a welfare check shortly before 4 p.m.
