In the early morning hours of a late April day in Martinsville, Virginia, the life of 37-year-old Clayborne Kent Jr., a Black male, was cut short. Just after midnight on April 29, 2023, police responded to a call about a disturbance in the vicinity of 54 West Church Street. Upon their arrival, they discovered Kent suffering from a gunshot wound.
Emergency medical services were dispatched to the scene, and Kent was quickly transported to SOVAH Health Martinsville.
Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries while en route to the hospital. The initial police response swiftly transitioned into a homicide investigation as officers began to process the scene and interview witnesses to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting.
The investigation quickly led to a person of interest. Later that same day, authorities located and arrested 23-year-old Trequon Antonio Davis at his residence on Beaver Street in Martinsville. The arrest was made without incident. Davis was subsequently charged with manslaughter, reckless handling of a firearm, and discharging a firearm in a public place resulting in injury. He was taken into custody and held at the Martinsville City Jail without bail. While an arrest has been made, authorities have continued to encourage anyone with information regarding the shooting to come forward to assist in the ongoing investigation.
