In the early morning hours of Sunday, November 1, 2020, a party in Martinsville, Virginia, turned tragic, ending the life of 23-year-old Jayland Jovan Sandoval Gonzalez. Born in Winston Salem, North Carolina, on April 6, 1997, Gonzalez was a resident of Martinsville who was known for his love of fishing and working on cars.
On that fateful night, Gonzalez was attending a large gathering at a residence on Rose Lane.
An argument broke out between Gonzalez and another man, escalating to a violent altercation. In the ensuing chaos, Gonzalez was shot multiple times in the torso. Following the shooting, he was transported by a private vehicle to the emergency room at SOVAH Health Martinsville. Despite the efforts of medical staff, Jayland Jovan Sandoval Gonzalez succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The alleged shooter fled the scene after the incident. However, law enforcement acted swiftly, and a suspect was apprehended shortly after. Demario Devonte Clark, a 27-year-old from Martinsville, was arrested in connection with the shooting. Clark was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and the use of a firearm during the commission of a felony. He was taken into custody and held at the Henry County Jail without bond. An autopsy was scheduled to be performed at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the Western District of Virginia.
