In a tragic turn of events that unfolded in south St. Louis, 51-year-old Karen Powderly, a female, was found deceased in a residence on the 4400 block of Chippewa. The discovery was made by St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department officers who were responding to a call from a woman reporting an assault by her husband. Upon their arrival, they located Ms.
Powderly, who had sustained a gunshot wound to her chest and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Further investigation inside the home led to the discovery of 53-year-old William Powderly, who was also deceased. He appeared to have suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities located a firearm next to his body. Witnesses who were present in the house reported hearing the couple engaged in an argument shortly before the sound of gunshots rang out.
The St. Louis police have characterized the incident as a murder-suicide. The investigation concluded that William Powderly was the suspect in the shooting death of Karen Powderly, before taking his own life. As the sole suspect is also deceased, no arrests were made in connection with Karen Powderly's death, and the case did not proceed to trial.
