In the spring of 2018, a heart-wrenching act of violence cut short the life of a young mother in north St. Louis County. On April 29th, 19-year-old Shawnee Staten was in her apartment, cradling her two-month-old infant daughter in her arms. In an instant, her life was tragically taken when she was shot in the face at close range. The devastating event left a community in mourning and a family shattered by the sudden and brutal loss of a young woman just beginning her journey into motherhood.
