On July 4, 2021, the life of 63-year-old female Gail Keys was tragically taken in the Mark Twain neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri. The incident began when Keys contacted emergency services to report a break-in at her residence located on the 5400 block of Ruskin Avenue. She identified the intruder as her ex-boyfriend, signaling a domestic disturbance that required immediate police intervention.
Officers responded to the call and met Keys outside her home to ensure her safety before attempting to enter the premises.
As the officers accompanied Keys to her front door, a violent ambush unfolded. When Keys opened the door to step inside her own home, the intruder, who was lying in wait within the residence, opened fire. Keys was struck by the gunfire and fatally wounded in the presence of the law enforcement officers who had arrived to assist her. The shooter, identified as 74-year-old Samuel Bailey, also directed his aggression toward the responding officers, leading to a standoff situation at the scene.
Law enforcement personnel established a perimeter around the house to contain the suspect. Bailey attempted to flee the scene by exiting through the rear of the home, where he was immediately confronted and taken into custody by the officers. During the subsequent investigation, detectives recovered a seven-shot revolver from the gangway where Bailey was apprehended. Forensic evidence further implicated him, as his palm print was lifted from a piece of plexiglass removed from a broken basement window, which was determined to be his point of entry into the home.
The legal proceedings concluded years later when Samuel Bailey appeared in court to answer for his actions. In August 2025, Bailey entered a guilty plea to a litany of serious charges, including second-degree murder, first-degree burglary, unlawful possession of a firearm, and five counts of first-degree assault of a special victim, stemming from his engagement with the five police officers at the scene. A judge sentenced Bailey to twenty years in the Missouri Department of Corrections, closing the case with a final judgment against the man responsible for the death of Gail Keys.
