On the evening of April 15, 2024, a tragic sequence of events unfolded in the Tower Grove South neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri, resulting in the death of 55-year-old Elizabeth 'Liz' Colletta. Officers from the St. Louis Police Department were dispatched to a residence on the 4200 block of Hartford Street near Bent Avenue around 9:30 p.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival at the scene, they discovered Colletta unresponsive on the front porch of her home.
She had suffered a fatal gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders. The incident was quickly classified by authorities as a domestic violence homicide.
The situation escalated rapidly as police attempted to secure the area. The suspect, identified as 50-year-old Black male Walter Ernest Young Sr., was inside the residence and refused to surrender to law enforcement. A tense standoff ensued, during which Young reportedly fired shots at the officers positioned outside. Police returned fire, and the exchange prompted the deployment of a SWAT team to the location. In an effort to end the confrontation, officers introduced tear gas into the home. After several hours, authorities breached the residence and found Young deceased inside. It remained unclear in the immediate aftermath whether his death was the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound or the return fire from the officers.
Colletta was a cherished member of her community and a dedicated professional who had spent 31 years working at Washington University in St. Louis. At the time of her death, she served as a co-manager of Sponsored Projects Accounting, a role in which she helped oversee substantial university grants and contracts. Colleagues remembered her for her problem-solving skills and her kindness. Beyond her career, she was described as a nature lover who enjoyed gardening, yoga, and hip-hop dancing. She was a devoted mother to her four children—Walter, Isaiah, Uriah, and Imani—and a grandmother. The investigation into the murder-suicide continued as detectives worked to piece together the final moments that led to the violence, though no other suspects were sought in connection with the case.
