In the early morning hours of April 5, 2020, Monrico Cortez Roseberry, a 35-year-old male, was fatally shot in a Kansas City, Missouri, apartment. The incident occurred in the 8000 block of Campbell Avenue when three men allegedly attempted a burglary. Police responded to a call just after 1 a.m. and discovered Roseberry on a living room sofa with a gunshot wound to his chest.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The events leading to the shooting began when George Steen, 21, allegedly conspired with Shimari Frierson, 24, and another unidentified man to rob Steen's sister of $60,000 from a settlement she had received. Steen reportedly contacted his sister that night asking for a place to stay. When she met him downstairs, two men allegedly pushed past Steen, with one holding her at gunpoint and demanding to be led to the money.
Upon entering the apartment, a confrontation ensued, and Roseberry was shot by one of the co-conspirators. Following the shooting, two suspects were seen fleeing the scene. An investigation led to the swift arrest of both Steen and Frierson.
Both men were subsequently charged in connection with the crime. Shimari Frierson was charged with second-degree murder, attempted burglary, and armed criminal action. George Steen faced charges of second-degree murder, burglary, and armed criminal action. Prosecutors requested a bond of $250,000 for Frierson and set Steen's bond at $300,000.
