Jeffrey Vaughn Mitchell, a 38-year-old deputy with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office, tragically lost his life in the early hours of October 27, 2006. While on patrol in a rural area near Dillard and Meiss Roads, Mitchell encountered a white Chevrolet van without license plates. He reported the vehicle stop to dispatch at approximately 3:30 a.m. and indicated that everything seemed "OK."
However, just seven minutes later, dispatch received a series of clicks from Mitchell's radio, signaling that something had gone terribly wrong. When backup arrived at the scene, they found Mitchell lying by the rear bumper of his patrol car, having been shot in the head with his own service weapon. The van, which was initially present, had vanished from the scene.
The investigation revealed that Mitchell had been involved in a violent struggle before being fatally shot. Evidence suggested that he had begun to handcuff a suspect when the situation escalated. During the altercation, Mitchell lost control of his pistol, which the suspect then used to shoot him. The white van was later discovered abandoned in the Cosumnes River, approximately 20 miles from the initial crime scene. Inside the van, deputies found two bodies, believed to have died from carbon monoxide poisoning. It is suspected that the individuals in the van were attempting to dispose of the bodies when Mitchell intervened.
