On July 11, 2020, Dwight Henderson, a 32-year-old male from the St. Louis area, was fatally shot during an encounter at a gas station in Berkeley, Missouri. Henderson, a father of two and a manager for Amazon delivery dispatchers, had stopped at the Petromart on Airport Road to purchase water. While he was inside the store, a vehicle occupied by several individuals pulled up next to his rental car.
Surveillance footage captured the sequence of events that followed, which would later become central to the investigation.
When Henderson exited the store, he discovered a stranger attempting to steal his vehicle. He ran toward the car to confront the individual, leading to a struggle between the two men. During the altercation, the assailant produced a firearm and shot Henderson once in the chest. The shooter then fled the scene in the arriving vehicle, leaving Henderson critically wounded; he subsequently died from his injuries.
Investigators identified the suspect as Ramon White, who was 18 years old at the time of the incident. Police utilized DNA evidence found in the rental car, surveillance video of the shooting, and social media messages where White attempted to sell a firearm shortly after the murder to build their case. White was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, attempted robbery, and armed criminal action.
In December 2023, a jury found Ramon White, then 21, guilty of second-degree murder, attempted robbery, and two weapons offenses connected to Henderson’s death. During the proceedings, it was revealed that this was not White's first involvement in a homicide case; three years prior to killing Henderson, he had been charged as an adult at age 15 for the fatal shooting of a 13-year-old boy near a playground. However, those charges were dropped in 2019 due to the unavailability of key witnesses. Following the guilty verdict for the murder of Dwight Henderson, White faced sentencing for his crimes.
