The incident took place late in the evening in the Glasgow Village area, specifically within the 10600 block of Moidart Circle. Earlier that day, J.T. had engaged in a physical altercation with his younger brother, David Jerome Hemphill.
Tensions from that earlier conflict reportedly carried over into the night when J.T. visited David’s residence around 10:30 p.m.
Upon his arrival, the brothers began to argue in the front yard of the property. During this confrontation, David retrieved a firearm while J.T. remained unarmed. Despite knowing his brother did not have a weapon, David fired multiple shots, striking J.T. repeatedly. Police officers from the North County Precinct responded to the scene after a detection system alerted them to the sound of gunfire. When authorities arrived, they discovered J.T. suffering from several gunshot wounds, and he was pronounced dead at the scene shortly thereafter.
David Hemphill, aged 46, was present when law enforcement arrived and was taken into custody without further incident. During subsequent questioning by detectives, he admitted to shooting his brother. Following his arrest, the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged him with second-degree murder and armed criminal action.
