Bander Abdel-Majed, an 18-year-old white male, was fatally shot on the afternoon of July 3, 2020, in St. Louis, Missouri. A recent graduate of Parkway South High School, he had ambitions of attending college. Known for his joyful and funny personality, he was well-loved by those who knew him and often helped out at his family's two convenience stores.
The incident occurred outside his family's business, the 99th Street Convenience Store, near Grand and Kossuth.
Accounts of the event suggest that a female customer had been involved in a heated argument with employees inside the store. After the woman went outside, multiple gunshots were fired. At the time, Abdel-Majed was outside the store, either assisting a customer with bags of ice or taking out the trash, when he was shot multiple times in the back. He was transported to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Following the shooting, the gunman fled the scene. In connection with the death of Bander Abdel-Majed, James E. Chaney, 54, was later arrested and charged with murder in July of that year. Family members believe the shooting was an act of retaliation stemming from the earlier dispute with the customer who had been asked to leave the store. The investigation into the senseless act of violence that cut short a young life full of promise is ongoing.
