In the early morning hours of July 25, 2020, a violent incident unfolded in downtown Columbia, Missouri, that ultimately claimed the life of 38-year-old Joseph Hecht, a white male resident of the area. Hecht was in the vicinity of Eighth and Locust streets around 12:40 a.m. when he sustained a gunshot wound during a disturbance. Rather than waiting for emergency services to arrive at the chaotic scene, Hecht was transported to a local hospital in a private vehicle.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel to save him, he succumbed to his injuries and passed away the following day, July 26, leaving behind a wife and two young daughters.
Detectives with the Columbia Police Department immediately launched an investigation into the homicide, working to piece together the events that led to the shooting. The inquiry quickly identified suspects, and significant progress was made when 27-year-old Marlin Cortez Johnson turned himself in to authorities shortly after the shooting. Johnson was arrested and subsequently charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action. Investigators determined that the altercation had escalated to gunfire, resulting in Hecht's untimely death.
As the legal case progressed, Marlin Cortez Johnson eventually accepted responsibility for his role in the killing. In court, he entered a guilty plea to the charge of second-degree murder. On July 31, 2023, a judge sentenced Johnson to 22 years in the Missouri Department of Corrections. The court granted him credit for the more than 1,000 days he had already spent in custody since his initial arrest.
The investigation also implicated a second individual, 23-year-old Kesan Tyree McNeal, who authorities alleged played a role in the aftermath of the crime. McNeal was charged with accessory to second-degree murder and hindering prosecution of a felony. Police accused him of assisting the primary suspect and obstructing the investigation. While Johnson’s case concluded with a prison sentence, legal proceedings for McNeal continued separately as prosecutors sought to hold all parties involved accountable for the events that transpired that summer night.
