On a tragic Mother's Day in Columbia, Missouri, the life of 37-year-old Demetrius Ware was cut short. On the evening of May 8, 2022, in the 800 block of Grand Avenue, Ware was fatally shot in the head. Both Ware and the man later accused of his murder, Isaac Bryant, were identified as African-American. The incident left a void in the lives of his family, particularly his two daughters.
The investigation into Ware's death quickly led authorities to a suspect.
Isaac Bryant, who was 38 at the time, became the focus of the police inquiry. Bryant had a criminal history, having been paroled from prison in September 2021 after serving a portion of a seven-year sentence for second-degree robbery and second-degree assault. Following the shooting of Demetrius Ware, an arrest warrant was issued for Bryant, and he was subsequently taken into custody.
Isaac Bryant was charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with Demetrius Ware's death. His case proceeded to a trial where a Boone County jury deliberated for three hours before finding him guilty on both counts in August. During the emotional sentencing hearing, Ware's mother and sister spoke about the profound impact of his murder. His sister, while expressing her grief, also offered a prayer that Bryant would find religion. The judge sentenced Bryant to life in prison for the second-degree murder conviction and an additional ten years for armed criminal action. A motion for a new trial filed by Bryant's defense attorney, which cited several alleged errors including the composition of the all-white jury, was denied by the judge.
