James Raymond Hundle, a 52-year-old White male from Columbia, Missouri, was a well-respected figure in his community known for his work at the University of Missouri and his local business ventures. He served as the assistant to the vice-chancellor and dean of the College of Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources, and was a dedicated advisor to the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity.
Additionally, he had been an entrepreneur in the area, previously owning establishments such as Ruckus Bar and Grill and Splasher’s Laundromat. His life was cut short when officers from the Columbia Police Department arrived at his home in the 4800 block of Marble Cedars Drive on October 13, 2021, to conduct a wellness check.
Upon entering the residence, authorities discovered Hundle deceased from a gunshot wound. The police immediately treated the scene as a homicide investigation, cordoning off the area near Scott Boulevard and Longview Park. Investigators canvassed the neighborhood and issued a subpoena for security system data from Tiger Security Services, specifically looking for any alarm activity at the home between October 6 and October 14. Despite the immediate mobilization of detectives and the collection of forensic evidence, the timeline of the attack and the identity of the perpetrator remained elusive.
In the years following the discovery, the case has remained active but unsolved. Police officials have described the investigation as being on the front burner, with detectives continuing to review evidence and encouraging the public to come forward with tips. A reward was offered for information leading to a resolution, yet no suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made in connection with the murder. The lack of answers has left his colleagues, former fraternity students, and the wider Columbia community searching for closure regarding the violent death of a man described by many as a guiding light and positive influence.
