On September 26, 2020, tragedy struck the Greater Ville neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri, claiming the life of 34-year-old Victoria McBee. The incident unfolded on the 4400 block of Lexington Avenue following a minor vehicle collision involving one of McBee's relatives and another individual. While the female victim was present at the scene, the situation escalated when a man who was not involved in the original crash approached the group. Identified as Deion A.
Whalen from Riverview, the man arrived armed with a rifle and began making threats toward those gathered at the site.
McBee, who was reportedly armed herself, attempted to intervene and de-escalate the rising tensions caused by Whalen’s aggressive behavior. Witnesses and court documents later revealed that she tried to calm the confrontation before a physical interaction occurred between her and the gunman. Despite her efforts to diffuse the volatility of the moment, Whalen fired his weapon at point-blank range, striking McBee. Emergency responders were unable to save her, and she died from her injuries, leaving a void in her community and family, which included her children.
Authorities quickly identified Whalen as the primary suspect, and he was taken into custody shortly after the shooting. Prosecutors initially charged him with first-degree murder, citing the unprovoked nature of his involvement in a dispute that did not concern him. During the subsequent legal proceedings, Whalen claimed he acted in self-defense, but the case proceeded to a jury trial in late 2022. The jury ultimately rejected the self-defense claim but found him guilty of the lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter, along with armed criminal action. In February 2023, the judge handed down a sentence of twenty years in prison, ordering Whalen to serve ten years for each count consecutively.
