In the autumn of 2020, the life of 21-year-old Jonail Carroll, a Black male from Saint Louis, Missouri, was tragically cut short. On the afternoon of November 24th, events unfolded in the suburban area of Velda City in St. Louis County that would end in his untimely death. While driving along Lucas and Hunt Road, near the intersection with Lincoln Avenue, a burst of gunfire shattered the day's calm.

Louis County police officers were initially called to what appeared to be a routine car crash. However, upon their arrival at the scene, they discovered a wrecked vehicle with two occupants, both of whom had sustained gunshot wounds. The grim reality of a violent altercation quickly became apparent. One of the men inside the car was Jonail Carroll. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead later that day. The other man in the vehicle, whose identity has not been publicly released, was also injured in the attack but fortunately survived with non-life-threatening wounds.
