In the summer of 2020, the life of 19-year-old Sequoia Whitfield was cut short by gun violence in St. Louis, Missouri. On the morning of August 12, police responded to a call at a McDonald's located on North Tucker Boulevard in the Carr Square neighborhood. There, they discovered Whitfield with a gunshot wound to his back. Despite the immediate response, the young man succumbed to his injuries, leaving a community to grapple with another senseless act of violence.
