On July 28, 2017, in Ferguson, Missouri, a Black male named Donnell 'DJ' Drake Jr. was fatally shot in a violent incident that occurred in the parking lot of the Arbor Village apartment complex. The twenty-two-year-old was reportedly visiting his mother’s residence around 10:08 p.m. when the attack took place. According to investigators, a vehicle pulled into the complex, and four to five individuals exited the car.
These suspects were described as wearing surgical masks and gloves, suggesting a premeditated attempt to conceal their identities.
Drake, who was outside at the time, appeared to sense the danger immediately. Witnesses stated that upon seeing the group of masked men, he called the police and warned an elderly neighbor to stay inside for safety. As he attempted to retreat to his own vehicle, one of the suspects approached and opened fire. Drake sustained multiple gunshot wounds during the ambush. When law enforcement officers arrived at the scene, they discovered him and another victim in a semi-conscious state. Both were transported to a local hospital, but Drake succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. The second victim survived the shooting.
Despite the specific details regarding the number of assailants and their disguises, the case has faced significant challenges in identifying the perpetrators. In the years following the murder, Drake’s mother, Robin, made public pleas for information, emphasizing that the group had come with 'no good intention' and had successfully disguised themselves to evade capture. A reward for information leading to an arrest was eventually raised to $50,000, yet authorities struggled to generate significant leads. As of the last available reports, no suspects have been formally charged or convicted in connection with his death, and the investigation has remained open with the killers still at large.
