In the quiet of a St. Louis County neighborhood, the evening of January 9, 2024, was shattered by the response of emergency services to a house fire on Baron Drive. Firefighters rushed to extinguish the blaze, and upon entering the home, they discovered the body of 46-year-old Freddie Tribbitt. What initially appeared to be a tragic fire soon revealed a more sinister story as St.
Louis County Police Department's Crimes Against Persons and Regional Arson and Explosives detectives began their investigation into a homicide.
The investigation quickly zeroed in on a suspect, Thurman Lowe, a 64-year-old man with a violent past, including a 1983 conviction for rape, burglary, and robbery for which he had served 30 years and was on parole. The evidence against Lowe was substantial and chilling, largely captured on camera footage. The video showed Lowe pacing outside Tribbitt's room, which was in a home owned by the victim, openly stating his intention to kill him. He was then seen armed, firing multiple rounds into Tribbitt's door before kicking it in. More gunshots were heard from within the room. Following the shooting, Lowe was recorded leaving the room only to return with a flammable item. Soon after he entered the room again, the smoke alarm was triggered, and smoke began to billow from the doorway as Lowe watched from a distance before fleeing the growing fire.
Based on the compelling video evidence and an identification by a witness, an 'at large' warrant was issued for Thurman Lowe on January 12, 2024. He faced a string of serious charges, including first-degree murder, armed criminal action, unlawful possession of a firearm, second-degree arson, and tampering with physical evidence. His parole officer also confirmed his identity from the camera footage. Lowe's run from the law came to an end on March 29, 2024, when he was apprehended in Las Vegas, Nevada. He is being held on a $3 million cash-only bond as he awaits legal proceedings for the violent death of Freddie Tribbitt.
