In the summer of 2015, a young man’s life was cut short on a Friday night in north St. Louis. Marquis Strickland, a 24-year-old male, was attending an event on the 1300 block of N. Garrison Avenue at approximately 8:30 p.m. when gunfire erupted. He sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his back, thigh, abdomen, and triceps. Although he attempted to flee the scene, one of the shooters pursued him, continuing to fire.
The aftermath of the shooting saw a swift response from law
enforcement, leading to the custody of two suspects. The first, a 30-year-old man, was reported to have an ongoing feud with Strickland. This suspect claimed he saw Strickland reach for his waistband and, believing he was armed, began shooting. After the initial shots, he followed Strickland and continued to fire before eventually returning to the scene where he was apprehended by police. No weapon was found on Marquis Strickland.
A second suspect, a 31-year-old male, was also present at the event. According to his account, he heard the gunshots and reacted by drawing his own firearm and shooting at unidentified individuals and a vehicle. He was taken into custody after resisting arrest. The investigation into that fatal evening proceeded with these two individuals in custody, implicated in the violent end to a young man's life.
